Author Interview: RuthAnne Snow

Hey friends! Welcome to my very first author interview series! I'm so excited to bring these four authors to you, so let's get started!

When the Truth Unravels

by RuthAnne Snow

Last month, Elin tried to kill herself. She knows she's lucky that her parents found her in time. Lucky to be going to prom with her three best friends, like any other teen. Like it never happened. And if she has anything to say about it, no one but her best friends will ever know it did. Jenna, Rosie, and Ket will do anything to keep Elin's secret—and to make sure it never happens again. That's why they're determined to make prom the perfect night. The night that convinces Elin that life is worth living. Except, at prom, Elin goes missing. Now it's up to her friends to find her. But each of the girls has her own demons to face. Ket is being blackmailed by an ex. Rosie is falling in love for the first time. And Jenna . . . Jenna is falling apart. And no one, not even her best friends, knows why. Heart-wrenching and utterly impossible to put down, When the Truth Unravels follows four friends as they confront their greatest hopes and darkest secrets in one life-changing night.

Introduce yourself and your debut novel.

My name is RuthAnne Snow and my debut novel, WHEN THE TRUTH UNRAVELS, releases January 8th from Sky Pony. I like to think of it as a feminist, mental-health-friendly THIRTEEN REASONS WHY. With jokes. (I always have to add "with jokes.")

What’s the most surprising part about your debut journey so far?

How fast it has gone! I swear I just signed my contract yesterday and now my book is coming out in less than two months.

Give a shout-out to a fellow debut!

I've met so many awesome debuts during this process! Tiana Smith and MATCH ME IF YOU CAN and I are sharing a release date, I just finished BLOODLEAF by Crystal Smith (also a Utah writer!), and I can't wait to read ANYA AND THE DRAGON (Sofiya Pasternack), SCARS LIKE WINGS (Erin Stewart), and THE LAST WORD (Samantha Hastings.)

Did I just list all Utah writers? Yes, yes I did. (Shrug.)

Tell us about your novel! How long did it take you to write this book?

Good question! It took about 9 months from when I first had the idea to when I finished, then probably 4-5 months of revisions.

What’s a cool thing about your book that isn’t in the blurb?

I name drop a lot of real Utah businesses in the book. To be clear, I am not advertising for them--it just felt natural at the time for kids to hit up Sodalicious and Cafe Rio.

What inspired you to write this book?

Like a lot of people, I read THIRTEEN REASONS WHY and really enjoyed it. I think in terms of a book about bullying, it's really fantastic. I think in terms of a book about mental health and suicidal behaviors, though, it's somewhat lacking. I just kept returning to that idea, the thirteen reasons versus one reason and then suddenly I had an idea for a group of friends heading to prom together, and bam. There it was.

What advice would you give to a new writer?

Buckle up! Writing is a lot of ups and downs and all that really matters is that you persevere when things get rough.

Describe your writing space.

I write anywhere that will have me :) Sometimes it's a local cafe, sometimes it's my home office. Lately I've been doing a lot at the kitchen counter while my little pal naps.

What book or author has most influenced your own writing?

I feel like such a broken record because every time I do one of these, I end up blathering on about Stephen King, but it is what it is. I think reading his books as a teenager made me realize that a book could be scary and funny and suspenseful and deep all at once if you gave your characters room to grow. So now, even when I am writing about serious topics, I make sure to have plenty of jokes because I think that's human nature. Even when things are really sad, everybody wants to laugh.

If you could only buy one book this year, which book would it be?

What a painful question! I guess I have to go with LOVE, HATE, AND OTHER FILTERS by Samira Ahmed.

A favorite recipe!

Caramel apple cider: Heat 1/4 cup cream and 1/4 cup brown sugar in a sauce pan until it bubbles, then add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, two cups apple cider, and a dash of cinnamon. Stir on medium for 10 minutes. It's the perfect winter treat.
